About Laser Therapy - Scientific Research and Evidence
There are thousands of published studies that demonstrate the clinical effectiveness of laser therapy. Among these, there are more than 100 rigorously controlled scientific studies documenting its effectiveness: injuries heal faster, a strengthening effect on tissue repair, improved blood flow and lymphatic drainage, relief for many pain syndromes and improved immune response.

Laser Therapy Can Benefit the Following Conditions:
Soft Tissues Injuries such as tendonitis, sprains and strains, neck/back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, knee cartilage damage, plantar fascitis and tennis/golf elbow; Degerative Joint Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis; Nervous System Conditions such as shingles, post traumatic injury, diabetic neuropathy, rheumatology (muscle pain) and RSD/CRPS; and Chronic Non-Healing Wounds such as venus ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, amputated limbs and burns.

History of Laser Therapy
The effects of red light on cellular function have been known since 1880, however, the clinical benefits were only discovered by accident during laser safety tests in 1967. The first low-power lasers suitable for treating pain became available commercially in the late 1970’s. Ever since, laser therapy has been widely utilized by doctors in Europe. The FDA approved laser therapy in 2001 and the treatment is quickly gaining popularity in the USA.

Your Questions Answered

What does the treatment feel like? There is little or no sensation during treatment, occasionally a soothing warmth or tingling.

Are there side effects or associated risks? During more than 20 years of use by healthcare providers throughout the world, very few side effects have been reported. A patient allergic to light may develop a rash or blister for a few days. Occasionally, old injuries or pain syndromes may feel aggravated for a few days, as the healing response is more active after treatment.

How long does each treatment take? The typical course of treatment is 5 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated.

How often should a patient be treated? Acute conditions may be treated daily, especially if they are accompanied by significant pain. More chronic problems respond better when treatments are received 2-3 times/week, tapering to once per week or every other week, with improvement.

How many treatments does it take? Improvement may be felt (usually pain relief) after the very first treatment. Sometimes, a number of treatments may be required to feel improvement. This does not mean nothing is happening as the treatments are cumulative and results are often felt after 3 or 4 sessions.

Can laser be used in conjunction with other treatments? Laser therapy is often used with other therapies including chiropractic adjustments, physical therapy, massage, soft tissue mobilization, electrotherapy and following surgery. Other healing modalities are complementary and can be used with laser to increase treatment effectiveness.
